Beobide Museum

Julio Beobide was born in Zumaia in 1891, and until his death in 1969 dedicated his life to sculpting, hardly ever leaving the town except during while he was learning his art.
He belongs to the generation of Basque sculptors born at the end of the 19th century who dedicated much of their work to religious motifs and realism-costumbrismo.
It is within this framework that Beobide’s work is located, although the artist continued to go his own way even after this type of work ceased to be popular in the years following the Spanish Civil War. In his work, Beobide was constantly searching for the essence of form, disregarding decorative or anecdotic aspects or the finer details. In the majority of cases, his pieces reflect his growing interest in the expressive qualities of his materials and forms, as is evident in the unfinished Christ figure housed in the museum.
The sculptor’s workplace has now been turned into a beautiful museum, containing sketches, works made from a variety of different materials (particularly wood) and the artist’s tool collection.
